Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Argues that, despite the university's late nineteenth-century motto, Cork's patron saint, Finbarr, did not teach near what is now University College Cork. Instead, St Finbarr's school was probably located at his church in Moville, near Bangor, Co Down, while it is his reputation as a teacher that became established in Co Cork. Contends that the clergy of Cork attributed the founding of their school (Gill Abbey) to Finbarr in a Life of the saint dated c 1200 in the hope of attracting more students, a deception not uncommon in Ireland at this time. Also mentions other deceptions within the same document. | ||
