Abstract:
This article introduces the concept of landscape to a community of wetland archaeologists. It considers landscape both as a resource in its own right and as a medium through which to pursue and assess sustainable development. It develops the argument that landscape is the context within which to understand archaeology and a means to help shape archaeological conservation. The second part of the article describes how the World Heritage Convention, the Protected Landscapes and the European Landscape Convention can be used to strengthen landscape policy, and in particular to encourage better protection, management and planning of landscape.
