Abstract:
Compares some of the fragmentary remains of third- and early fourth-century forts from northern Britain with better understood forts of the lower Danube and eastern Empire. It thereby shown that certain distinctive later Roman plans, hitherto unrecognised in north-western provinces, were used in Britain and at an earlier date than in the eastern provinces.
