Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Once described as one of the historic towns of Cornwall in the medieval period and now a very small village, its character is thought always to have been rural rather than urban, despite being termed a borough in medieval documents. The background for the establishment of its borough status circa thirteenth to fourteenth century is appraised and its development from borough to village traced, making use of the layout recorded on a Tithe map of 1840 as well as on OS maps. A small castle, church and sixteenth century grammar school are the only surviving medieval buildings. The castle earthworks, market place and burgage plots were surveyed, and the town placed in a hypothetical hinterland context. There is an `Appendix: Week St Mary in the 1841 census' (152--3). | ||||||||||
