Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Despite its apparent fame, arising from the crosses, castle, church, and speculation that the site was a prehistoric tin-trading point (Ictis), little archaeological work or knowledge underpins overall conceptions of St Michael's Mount. Following the commissioning of the CAU by Lord St Levan and the National Trust to begin to rectify the situation and ensuing report (CAU Herring 1993) this note provides a chronological overview of the archaeology and archaeological history of the area. Prehistoric and Roman evidence is followed by details of the foundation of a Benedictine monastery (1044), later medieval priory, castle and post-medieval defences, stately home and estate, harbour and village. | |||||||||
