Abstract:
A sequence of superimposed houses divisible into three structural periods dating from c 1050-1150 to the time of its desertion in the late-fifteenth or early-sixteenth century was revealed by the 1964 excavations. Those of the first period were built of turf. Although their remains were few, they provide new information on the construction of this type of building in south-west England. During the second period, probably commencing in the thirteenth century, the turf-built houses were replaced by a stone-built longhouse. The final structural period saw the development of a small prosperous farmstead comprising a longhouse, a subsidiary dwelling, and a barn. The excavation and archive are stored in the Chyandour Estate Office, Penzance, where they may be studied by appointment. There are reports on `The pottery from Old Lanyon' by Cathy O'Mahoney (152-63) and a `Catalogue of illustrated pottery' (163-6).
