Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A Rhenish source for Class E wares can no longer be postulated, since a search through Rhenish, Dutch and N French museums has revealed no good parallels to the British material, though a handful of true E wares occurs in Brittany and Channel Islands. However, some 10th-12th cent sherds from Camp du Chaillot, near Saintes, are very like E wares in texture, colour and fabric, and their forerunners in that district should be sought. A revised catalogue and map of E wares in Britain, from Scilly to Hebrides, supports the notion of a W French origin, and there are several other reasons to abandon the idea of a Rhenish source. Heavy mineral analysis of sherds from Gwithian and Dunadd showed the use of identical tempering sands in these widely-separated sites; and these sands, though not to be expected in the Rhineland, could be found in the Paris Basin or Acquitaine. | |||||
