Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The ornamental collar first published in Archaeologia in 1812 has now been certainly provenanced, thanks to a MS reference by W C Borlase in 1871, and has undergone metallurgical analysis. The backplate of the collar is of bronze, the frontplate of brass with 30% zinc, which implies a post-Conquest date. The collar relates to those from Wraxall and Portland in form and decoration, and exhibits that "peripheral archaism" of the British Iron Age noted by Hodson in other contexts. | |||||||
