Abstract:
The application of scientific techniques to address archaeological research questions has increased greatly in scope over the last twenty-five years, although it is acknowledged that valuable work in, for example, environmental archaeology was undertaken in Cornwall in the 1950s to 1980s. The principal scientific techniques available can be grouped into five subject areas, four of which are discussed in more detail in this article (the fifth, geophysical survey, is reviewed elsewhere in this volume). Those covered here are: environmental archaeology, broadly defined as the study of past human economy and environment; scientific dating, here including the application of radiocarbon dating, dendrochronology and optically stimulated luminescence to understand the chronology of past events and environmental changes; ancient technology, encompassing the study of the early use of natural raw materials to produce, for example, metalwork and glass; and applied techniques, including biomolecular studies such as the analysis of lipids and proteins. Some priorities for future research are suggested. LD
