Abstract:
Discoveries of new sites through aerial photography, the National Mapping Programme, geophysical surveys, evaluations and excavations have all made significant contributions to understanding of Iron Age and Romano-British settlement in Cornwall over the past twenty-five years. Artefacts recorded through the Portable Antiquities Scheme and routine scientific dating have also added new knowledge. This article discusses the emerging chronological framework for the periods and then describes how recent fieldwork and other projects have been capturing information and leading to increased understanding in areas such as: fieldscapes; settlement character and variety; cliff castles, hillforts and coastal settlement; fogous; Iron Age burial traditions, cultural and ceremonial practices; specialist sites and the rise of craft industries; Roman burial traditions; Roman forts; and Romano-British lifestyles and material culture.
