Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Outlines the principles, purposes and applications of historic landscape characterisation (HLC), a technique that was devised in Cornwall in 1993 and has since become an important archaeological tool. By recognising that all parts of an area are historic and can be managed and planned for, HLC complements more traditional approaches to conservation and heritage planning based on selection, designation and protection. Developments in HLC in Cornwall and Scilly since the 1990s have included historic seascape characterisation, and more detailed studies of selected areas. Urban characterisation, seen from the 1960s onwards as part of the process of defining Conservation Areas, has also developed over the last few years to cover areas such as suburbs and modern housing estates in addition to historic town centres.
