Noting the Roman Building Trust's proposals to build a Roman style bath suite in South Shields, the author recounts his experiences and observations made during a stint as a stoker at the replicated Roman baths at Xanten. The results of measurements taken have not been fully analysed, but subjective judgement of the conditions in the caldarium suggest that the operating temperature of such buildings was lower than previously thought. | |||
