Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Examination of the development of hillforts and 'defensive ditches' throughout Britain suggests that the need was less for defence than for expressing the isolation and prestige of a social elite; much of the evidence for warlike destruction could be explained as ritualized abandonment. In 'nondefensive' enclosures the frequent evidence for ditch backfilling or silting suggests an ephemeral 'barrier of isolation'. | |||||
