Abstract:
Different scholars have arrived at very different interpretations of social structure from the evidence of grave-goods. The muddle can be clarified somewhat: the Merovingian dead were not 'equipped for death' but were merely dressed as if for life, in a way deemed suitable by their heirs/buriers. An ostentatious burial gained prestige within the family and confirmed the inheritor's position: as with Childeric/Clovis, Gorm/Harald Bluetooth (and perhaps Sutton Hoo?), the lavish burial was of the father of a great king.
