Abstract:
The intense interest generated by the Meso remains found in the Oban caves and shell middens eclipsed the evidence of Neo-BA use, possibly funerary (as indicated by more recent discoveries at Raschoille and at Carding Mill Bay (see 91/292). Examination in the wider regional context of Neo-BA monuments suggests the possibility that burial in middens conveyed ancestral legitimacy; and there may have been an integration of resource procurement with funerary practices. Appended is a note on the Risga shell midden in Loch Sunart, with its extensive tool assemblage found in the 1920s.
