A mathematical analysis is presented concerning collections of randomly distributed points within fixed regions. Formulae are derived which express the expected number of alignments of three points and the expected number of concurrences of such alignments, both being defined as acceptable within given tolerances. This enables one to determine whether evidence on the ground (say consideration of the positions of cairns on an island) gives statistically significant backing for hypothesizing that observed alignments and concurrences were deliberate.
