Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
An overview of artefact studies across the country, preceded by a brief outline of the topography, which forms a framework for succeeding articles (see also 95/286, 95/355, 95/387, 95/394-5). Chronological sections then relate artefactual evidence for human activity and document work that has been, and is being undertaken in the following categories; Mesolithic, Neolithic, EBA, LBA, IA, early medieval, later medieval, and plantation period (1550-1800). It is concluded that artefact research has lagged behind other forms of archaeological endeavour in Ireland (eg palaeoecology) and some thought is given to possible ways forward including the development of a broader theoretical base for analysis, increased interdisciplinary research, and wider contacts with professionals/scholars from abroad to increase debate currently lacking because of the size of the profession. | |
