Abstract:		 Reports work in an area thought to be the chief seat of the Kingdom of Gwynedd (sixth century onwards), although the exact location of the court complex remains unknown. From 1973, excavations may have yielded more information. It is thought possible that there may have been a Roman fort at Aberffraw which provided a focus for later development. It is noted that the llys was probably relocated in the fourteenth century to the site of the present village. The 1973 excavations identified three phases of earthwork (defensive ditch) with the first two interpreted as Roman on the basis of pottery sherds and a characteristic cleaning slot. Work in 1988 on a boundary ditch within the village provided a radiocarbon date of AD 27--387 (two sigma calibrated range). Despite the lack of conclusive evidence it is thought that a first-century Roman fort may have been present.
