Abstract:
Offers a selective review of Neolithic case studies from central and western Europe, from 5th millennium bc Linearbandkeramik culture to 4th and 3rd millennia in Britain, Ireland and Denmark. Emphasis is on dispersed settlement patterns, and processes of formation of the archaeological record and of its recovery are considered (eg fieldwalking and study of field systems). Inferences may be drawn on social systems from the study of settlement patterning.
