Abstract:
Brief history of the castle built c 1240 with two documented periods of refurbishment in 14th century, a rebuild in 15th, and dereliction after the Civil Wars. The inner and outer wards, with 17th century ravelin, are surveyed and described. Excavations on the N tower of the gatehouse exposed the plan of the med structure, but only postmed levels could be examined owing to restrictions on excavation.
