Abstract:
The place name 'Riverhead' derives from Old English and means 'cattle wharf'. This article examines the evidence that a site of this name close to the source of the River Darent was formerly the site of a quay, perhaps dating to Roman or Anglo-Saxon times. In addition to place-name evidence, unpublished accounts of a level grass 'platform', a study of banks and hedgerows, historical evidence for the economic importance of the area, archaeological evidence of Roman activity, and the presence of a parish boundary coinciding with the 'platform' are all considered. A planning application to build on an area adjacent to the 'quay line' has been made; the article recommends that if the application is successful, it would be prudent to maintain an archaeological watching brief at the site.
