Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Archaeological investigations in advance of construction of the West Malling and Leybourne Bypass revealed significant evidence for prehistoric, Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon activity; previously, little had been known about the area prior to the 10th century. The earliest finds were flint tools dating to the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age. These finds, as well as Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery, were scattered across the excavation areas. In one area a sequence of Iron Age enclosures was found; recovered artefacts indicated the proximity of a settlement. Elsewhere an additional Iron Age enclosure contained evidence for industrial activity. In both areas, activity had continued into the Romano-British period. An Anglo-Saxon sunken featured building and a 13th century bakery within a medieval field system were also recorded. LD | |||||||||||||||||||||||
