Abstract:
This article challenges the notion that flint-working disappeared from archaeological view at the end of the Bronze Age. Some of the factors that can lead to the classification of flint from post-Middle Bronze Age contexts as 'residual' are outlined, and a range of criteria developed by the authors for the study and identification of later lithic material are presented. It is suggested that it was in the domestic sphere that lithic utilisation went on the longest, continuing well into the Iron Age in certain areas; this argument is set into context by considering the processes involved in the 'replacement' of stone tools by metal artefacts.
