Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
In 1859, Joseph Prestwich and John Evans launched a new phase of scientific enquiry with their discovery of a Palaeolithic biface stone tool at St Acheul on the outskirts of Amiens, France, and their presentation of this find to the Royal Society. In the 150 years since then there have been three phases in the study of lithics. This short article introduces an anniversary volume that recalls the achievements and contributions of many of the key players. It outlines the three phases, and concludes by noting that there is no substitute for hands-on experience when it comes to the properties and potential of stone: it is that complex shared hominin experience, with its deep emotional underpinnings, that should guide our steps into a fourth age of lithics.
