During recent excavations at Three Holes Cave in south Devon, a curved backed blade with a distal oblique truncation was found stratified in an in situ Late Upper Palaeolithic hearth deposit. The object forms part of a small lithic assemblage of Creswellian type. The historic definition of the term 'Creswellian' and the distinction between 'Creswell' and 'Cheddar' points is explained. It is then argued that curved and angle-backed points represent a midway in a continuum of forms of backed and truncated side-hafted blades for which the two extremes are the classic Creswell and Cheddar points. It is probable that all of these forms served the same role in the Creswellian tool-kit. It is suggested that, rather than proposing a new name for the form, the artefacts discussed here should be referred to by the descriptive name 'Creswellian curved and angle-backed points'.
