Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
An overview of the industrial heritage resource of Britain during what the English Tourist Board have designated Industrial Heritage Year (1993). Points of emphasis include the immediacy and accessibility of heritage that affected communities within living memory, and information on existing heritage centres including green field museums where structures have been moved to other sites in the face of imminent development. Industrial heritage in the landscape, the conversion of buildings to other uses, loss, and the development of the preservation movement are also covered. OS maps from the 1840s and contemporary commercial directories are recommended as points of first reference. |
