Abstract:
Paper reporting on excavation work in 1999--2000 on the site of the sixteenth- and early-seventeenth-century bell- and cauldron-foundry of the Birdall family in Cowick Street, St Thomas, Exeter. Archaeological investigations took place in the context of redevelopment. Earlier phases of excavation took place on the site in 1978 and 1984. The present report deals with the extensive areas of quarry pits for clay for mould making which were spread over an area of some 4500 sq m, and the large quantities of broken cauldron mould recovered from the back-filled pits. Separately authored contributions include
