Abstract:
A post-Roman cemetery was discovered during a watching brief on a gas pipeline construction project in south Devon. The cemetery was not fully exposed within the corridor, but 111 graves were identified, of which forty-seven were excavated. The cemetery was potentially in use from the fifth to the eighth century AD. The graves were aligned east--west and there was good evidence for the use of wooden coffins; grave goods did not appear to be present and the survival of human bone was very poor. Within the area excavated five square or rectangular ditched burial enclosures were recorded; four contained a single burial and one a multiple burial. The cemetery may have started life in the late Roman period, as there is evidence nearby of high-status settlement from the fourth century. Separately authored contributions include
