Abstract:
Paper on Keynedon Barton, one of a group of large mansions and smaller manor houses with courtyard plans, which developed in the later medieval and early post-medieval periods in the coastal areas adjacent to the navigable estuaries of the South Hams. The report presents a measured survey, undertaken in 1997--9, and written description of the standing buildings at Keynedon, together with the results of a dendrochronological survey. Suggestions are made regarding the development of the buildings and their layout from the thirteenth or early-fourteenth century to the present day. Documentary evidence is summarised, and comparisons made with similar houses in the locality. A short gazetteer of nearby houses with comparable plans or features has been compiled. The buildings at Keyndon Barton are listed grade II*. Includes
