Abstract:
In 2001 an earthenware fireback and spit support of seventeenth-century date were found at Myrtle Street, Appledore, when the blocking of a large stone fireplace was removed. The paper records this find, discusses the other examples of such hearth-furniture made by the north Devon potteries, and relates their stamped patterns to those found on north Devon floor-tiles.
