Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Fort Charles, Salcombe, is a small coastal artillery fort, probably built in the mid 1540s. It was rebuilt as a Royalist fortification in 1643 and besieged by Parliamentarian forces, surrendering in 1646. Building survey has shown that the sixteenth-century fort had an irregular ground-plan, with a battery accommodating six cannons facing the sea, and a tower and kitchen behind. On the first floor were domestic quarters; above these was a gun-platform. The Civil War rebuilding took the form of strengthening of the landward side of the defences.
