Abstract:

Salvage recording on the northern burh defences at Totnes showed that they consisted of a rampart c. 9m wide and a large ditch c. 5m deep. A primary organic deposit in the ditch dated to the eleventh or twelfth century; the defences appear to have been abandoned in the late fourteenth or fifteenth century. Observations made in recent years on other parts of the defences are also described. Specialist reports include
