Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Paper on the Church Rocks wreck, one of ten Devon underwater sites designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973. Since 1975, when the site was discovered, there has been intermittent survey and excavation. The paper offers a synopsis of the early years, then details survey and excavation results in the 1990s together with an assessment of current research. Analyses are given of the ordnance, metalwork and ceramics from earlier investigations, and of ceramics and a copper-alloy seal from the 1990--95 investigations. The report concludes that the vessel was probably a lightly armed merchantman, most likely of Venetian origin, of late-sixteenth or early-seventeenth-century date. Specialist reports include | |||||
