Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
An account of documentary and archaeological evidence for Butterprint Lane brickworks, and Hawker's Hill brickworks, both at Motcombe, and Kingscourt brickworks, Gillingham. Primarily concerned with the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; some evidence also points to earlier activity. The proliferation of brickyards during the 1800s is largely attributable to urban and rural development. They often sprang up in the vicinity of suitable clay deposits, and once redundant can become rapidly overgrown making documentary research necessary. | |
