Abstract:
Investigations ahead of construction of a relief road around Gillingham revealed two large stone and clay ovens from which archaeomagnetic and radiocarbon dates of late-seventh to early-eighth century were obtained. Both had been altered at least three times and ash layers associated with the ovens produced a range of carbonised plant macrofossils. Quantities of iron slag were recovered from layers not directly associated with the ovens, but other material finds were scarce. The ovens were surrounded by a group of earthworks, dated in the main by pottery to the twelfth to thirteenth centuries AD. `Metalwork' by Julie Lancley (114), `The slag' by Gerry McDonnell (114--15), `The pottery' by Lorraine Mepham (115--17), `The fired clay' by Julie Lancley (117--20), `Ceramic building material' by Julie Lancley (120), `Worked flint and chert' by Philip Harding (120--1), `Carbonised plant remains' by J Ede (121), `Charcoal' by Rowena Gale (121--3) `Animal bone' by Michael J Allen (123--4).
