Abstract:
The third season of excavations failed to identify the presumed formal garden, but established at least two phases of activity in the upper garden, which grew flowers, fruit and vegetables throughout its use. Concentrating on the upper walled garden, excavations established the extent of the large central flowerbed, unsuccessfully edged with stones to prevent collapse of the soft sides. The foundations of the second phase of the gazebo produced an inscribed base sherd from a wine bottle, and the remains of a slight terrace in the north of the garden, although it was unclear whether this landscaping formed part of the original seventeenth century garden or eighteenth century bowling green.
