Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Details investigations into this subterranean structure. An octagonal structure surrounds the top of a vertical square shaft lined with ragstone blocks. At a depth of 3.4m the shaft becomes slightly wider with the uppermost lining being supported by arches. This `steining' gives way at 12.5m to natural ragstone. `I' section iron girders support wooden stages or platforms at intervals throughout the shaft. There is also evidence for pump rods or water pipes. The lowest platform is at a depth of 14m, just above the water level. Two short adits were excavated and found to be lined with modern style bricks. The water is 4.9m deep giving a total depth of 19.5m which has possibly been reduced over time by accumulated debris. The staging is probably a contemporary construction -- possibly c First World War, although further documentary evidence would be needed to confirm this. Two lead pipes run into the shaft, one to feed collected rainwater in and the other probably to pump water to the gatehouse. `The team (&) further comments' by Michael Jackson (15) includes brief mention of the author's dowsing activities in connection with this site. | |||||||
