Abstract:
Although the Society's main area of interest has been the N Somerset-Bristol-Bath region, it has also worked in the Wye Valley and in Ireland, and has not confined itself to cave research. Activity has covered all periods from Pleistocene to medieval, the museum flourishes despite war damage, and the journal is published regularly. Major contributions to Pleistocene and Palaeolithic studies were made at Cheddar, Brean Down and Picken's Hole. The main Neolithic site was Priddy Circles, but the Kilgreany Cave (Co Waterford) dig yielded a skeleton recently 14C-dated to the Neolithic. The Beaker material, especially the rich site at Gorsey Bigbury, can now be related to Clarke's scheme for Britain. Valuable barrow-mapping was done in the 1920's, and excavations produced useful information on BA burial rites and ceramics. Read's Cavern, a Late Pre-Roman occupation, is the richest of the Society's EIA sites (all now referable to Hodson's 1964 scheme). RB studies include Brean Down temple, where the minim problem was elucidated, and research excavations at two native settlements.
