Abstract:
Civilian clothing and textiles of the period 57 BC to early 5th cent AD are discussed in the light of archaeological, sculptural, literary and philological evidence. In most areas, male "barbarian" costume of tunic, cloak and breeches was superseded soon after the conquest by a basic ensemble combining a Gallic coat and cape, a scarf and perhaps an undergarment. Basic female garments were a Gallic coat, a cloak, bonnet and sometimes an undergarment and scarf, while children wore smaller versions of adult clothes. Two identical fibulae for the shoulders and usually a third fibula for the breast, a grouping often reflected in grave finds, are associated with an early female ensemble, the "Costume of Menimane"; found mainly in rural areas it was the equivalent of male "barbarian" costume. Provincial clothes probably owed little to Roman fashions but themselves greatly influenced Italian dress in the later period. AT
