Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
This paper examines the evidence for wine consumption at the Llanelen farmstead in Gower between c 1290 and c 1315. The evidence comprises several jugs, one of which came from the Saintonge, adjacent to the wine producing area of Gascony. The excavations also recovered evidence for grain, meat and seafood. It is proposed that the inhabitants of Llanelen had a mixed economy, with agriculture and iron production. Economic diversity may have led to prosperity and hence the ability to afford wine.
