Discussion of the range of fire-irons and cooking utensils of traditional Irish cottages and their uses. Most of these items were made of cast-iron by the local blacksmith except (expensive) Dutch ovens. The poor would not have had many cooking utensils -- they ate fewer vegetables and generally could not afford to drink tea. Though most visitors would have sat around the kitchen hearth, important guests and American relatives would have been entertained in the otherwise unused parlour. Turf (peat sods) was the usual fuel, the ashes of which were initially swept into an ash-hole at the rear of the hearth where they accumulated before being removed and transported every two weeks to an outdoor pit. | |||
