Abstract:
Short article on the threat to Irish archaeological heritage by theft of portable objects (including those from shipwrecks), metal detecting, and the destruction of archaeological monuments. Argues that not all ringforts need be conserved, but `as many as is practicable', while the more important old town buildings should be sampled by type for conservation. Also stresses the need for high technology conservation of fragile artefacts of metal or wood recovered from underwater sites.
