Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Also called the Scots cart because of its Scottish origins or the box cart due to its shape, this article describes what has become the traditional Irish cart. Particular features of the cart are highlighted, while its varied uses are outlined with reference to the author's rural childhood experiences. There is also an overview of earlier and regional types (such as the slipe and the County Antrim wheelchair). However, many carts were of a unique design as they were home-made, especially those owned by poorer farmers. Concludes that while horses were used by some of the more well-off farmers to pull their carts, the majority of them would have used donkeys. | |||
