Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The concluding part of an article on the town of Birr. Provides an overview of the documentary sources for the history of the town, notably the Rosse papers which are kept at the Earl of Rosse's seat at Birr Castle. This collection of records spans the period from the early-seventeenth century to the present day, and its value for genealogical research into the tenant families and their holdings is highlighted here. Other local history sources are mentioned, including nineteenth-century census data, property records, newspapers, and antiquarian books. Concludes with a discussion of local heritage projects in Birr: the development of a new Historic Science Centre at Birr Castle (based on the restored nineteenth-century 72 inch telescope in the castle grounds) and a recent conservation plan drawn up for Birr Urban District Council. The latter emphasises the need for conserving the character of what is officially called Ireland's Georgian Heritage town. | ||
