Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
General description of the size, layout and building materials of pre-Famine Irish cottages. Regional variations in the availability of materials produced different types of cottages; -those in the West were built only of stone while those in the Midlands were half stone and half wattle-and-daub. Byre houses which were common in Ulster and the western seaboard were built to house livestock in the same building as the farmer's family. Tradition often defined the shape of many cottages and demanded that the farmer's dung-heap be within sight of the house. Author also gives some reminiscences of her grandparents' home which was demolished in the 1960s. | ||
