Abstract:
Considers the evidence for Bronze Age copper mining in Ireland with particular reference to the excavated site at Mount Gabriel, Co Cork (see 95/1071), which has been radiocarbon-dated to 1700--1550 BC. Another site undergoing excavation -- Ross Island, near Killarney (Co Kerry) -- has provided an even earlier radiocarbon date of 2200 BC. Mention is also made of nineteenth-century AD mining and its remains in West Cork, though this is likely to have destroyed or damaged many early sites.
