Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report Abstract:	Despite a general agreement amongst archaeologists about what style is, debate continues about specific issues such as what style does, how it relates to social and cultural processes and how best to study it archaeologically. This article offers a summary of work done in the past fifteen years, identifies various types of style and examines the questions under debate with reference primarily to portable artefacts. The socio-cultural significance of style and material culture, the relationship between style and technology and the development of analytical approaches are discussed.
