Abstract:
The basic objectives of the project will be to investigate two working hypotheses. Firstly, that the layout of present day Farndon dates back to the Late Saxon period. This is based on documentary records stating that Edward King of Mercia was buried at the royal vill of Farndon, and the circular/round plan of the town. The second area of investigation will be the nature and scale of Roman military occupation in the vicinity. Preliminary excavation will be needed before a future strategy can be reasonably worked out.
