Ordnance Survey records made in 1841 indicate two separate sections of what may have been a continuous Roman road between Manchester and Wigan. This report records investigations into the postulated middle section between Manton and Hindley. Sections at Charlton Fold and possibly Worsley are noted. The most promising section occurs at Mosley Common where further examination of a raised ridge at Tydesley produced a continuous hard surface approximately one foot beneath the soil. Several displaced cobble stones were also observed. Pots of Roman coins were found buried where the road was cut by a stream at right angles at two locations. It is noted that confirmation of the road at Worsley may affect further development at Worsley Old Hall. In addition, Mosley Common is currently marked for redevelopment as part of a mining complex so any residual remains are under threat. The presence of stretches of road is generally confirmed by oral history. | ||||
