Abstract:
A large amount of Roman pottery was discovered in his garden by a householder. A test pit was excavated by archaeologists, and it soon became apparent that this was the site of a rubbish dump of the Roman period. More than 19,000 ceramic fragments weighing over 520kg were recovered, together with plaster, slag, stone, one quern stone, coins and other small finds. The article presents histograms of various categories of pottery resulting from a simple analysis. Pottery wasters and kiln fragments were also present, suggesting that a kiln or kilns lay in the vicinity during the Roman period. LD
